Stop Muscle Loss by Eating This Fruit Every Day

 

Muscle loss (or muscular atrophy) is something that can happen to any of us, even when we lead health-conscious lives. Recent research has uncovered a biological “trigger” for muscle loss, and two compounds that can stop that “trigger” from being pulled. This news means that people who are especially vulnerable to muscle loss, such as the elderly, can now prevent muscular weakness from setting in, and may even be able to reverse prior muscular atrophy (Muscle atrophy is when muscles waste away) — simply by eating two delicious and good-for-you foods.

 

The Age-Muscle Connection

As our bodies age, they become prone to muscular weakening. Although this is a natural part of growing older, it can leave people more susceptible to serious injuries, like broken bones due to falling.  Muscles continue to grow larger and stronger from the time of birth up until around age 30; people can lose as much as 3 to 5 percent of their muscle mass every 10 years after their 30th birthday. After the age of 75, atrophy tends to accelerate.

This weakening of muscles can make life more difficult and less enjoyable when we reach our senior years, as the loss of strength, agility and stamina can prevent us from doing things like gardening or hiking—even just walking can become a perilous task when muscle weakness is present. Although muscular atrophy as we get older is natural, a new study has shown that it is not at all necessary. In fact, one simple dietary change can stop muscle loss from occurring or keep it from worsening if it is already in progress.

 

Apple and Green Tomatoes Can Halt Muscle Loss

You might be surprised to learn that the key to stopping and even reversing muscle loss lies within two very common fruits: apples and green tomatoes. By eating these two fruits every day, you can keep your muscles strong and healthy over the long term, regardless of your age. Who would have thought a few apple slices or a serving of green salsa could be so powerful?

 

How it Works: Ursolic Acid and Tomatidine

The ursolic acid in the peel of an apple, and tomatidine in green tomatoes. These two substances can act as a kill switch for the expression of the muscle-deteriorating ATF4. The researchers found that after two months of having ursolic acid and tomatidine added to their diet, the rodent subjects showed significant increases in both muscle mass and muscular strength, with mass increasing by 10 percent and strength increasing by 30 percent.

 

An Apple a Day Really Could Keep the Doctor Away

Apples are tasty and healthy, and green tomatoes are a yummy treat. Eat an apple per day (and a green tomato, too! which you can eat raw in a salad to add tangy flavor and crisp texture) and fortify your muscles against age-related atrophy by pushing the ATF4 “off” button.
