I wanted to take some time to chat about eating habits and some tips to support developing them. What we eat plays a major role in how we feel and look. There are extreme benefits of being conscious of what and how we eat, and it takes a lot less effort than you think.

A healthy eating plan gives your body the nutrients it needs every day while staying within your daily calorie goal for losing, gaining, or maintaining weight. But eating healthy is more than just counting calories.

The choices we make for HOW we fuel our bodies is the most important part of any diet.

And there are just a few basic guidelines that can make a huge difference for you:

 

Keep it simple: Choose foods that have as few ingredients as possible. If you can’t pronounce it, you probably shouldn’t eat it…

 

Shop the perimeter: Shop around the outer ring of the supermarket. This is typically where you’ll find all of the fruits, vegetables, meats, and dairy–all the good stuff.

 

Avoid the aisles: Just to reinforce the point above, all that stuff in the middle aisles tends to be processed junk. Stick to the perimeter and you’ll be off to a good start.

 

Say no to the freezer: Avoid the freezer section and canned food!  While frozen fruits and vegetables are an acceptable substitute (particularly for smoothies!), eating things like Lean Cuisine is not eating healthy. Their Baked Chicken (that you microwave) lists over 70 ingredients! 70!! It may have fewer calories than other choices, but that doesn’t mean it’s good for your body. If it’s from the freezer or a can and has more than 1 ingredient, skip it.

 

Cut out the Sodas! Don’t drink your calories, save them for healthy food choices. Even if you’re drinking “Diet” Coke, it’s just useless chemicals you’re ingesting. Substitute herbal teas, which boost the immune system and aid digestion. Flavoring water with sliced fruit is also a great trick.

 

Shop local: When possible shop at farmers markets that specialize in local and organic foods.

 

And that’s it! If you shop the perimeter and make choices with pronounceable ingredients, you’ll be off to a great start.
